Giving Back to Grower’s Communities #NaissanceQuest

Naissance Quest

Here at Naissance we are on a constant journey of Discovering Better’.  We believe that natural ingredients should be just that. Natural. It sounds obvious, we know, but it’s not always the case with many cosmetics brands. What’s more, we think natural ingredients shouldn’t cost the earth. We are constantly searching for ‘better’ and pioneering more ethical and sustainable ways of working and doing things. Things that not only benefit us as a business but, more importantly, benefit individuals, communities, society, and the world in which we live.

We strive to bring you the best quality products, so you always know exactly what you’re putting on your skin, and we search the far corners of the globe to achieve this.  We build open, honest partnerships with our suppliers, and conversations that go beyond a simple email or a phone call. By working directly with growers all around the world we can not only ensure the premium quality, sustainability and traceability of our products but also give back to communities helping build a better future and way of life for all those involved.  Our quest for ‘Discovering Better’ never ends and drives all that we do as an organisation.

We would like to invite you to join us on this journey of discovery also. Read on to hear more about our sustainable partnerships and what we have planned so far...

The Quest for Organic Shea Butter (2018)

We have recently founded a new partnership with an amazing supplier called Georgina Koomson, from Ghana, West Africa.  Georgina is part of a cooperative of over 600 women who together, through the manufacturing of Shea Butter support a local community of over 2400 individuals. This industry vastly helps their local economy and it has enabled them to build wells for clean water, schools to provide children with a vital education and a nursery to help mums with young children get back to work. Georgina has built this up from a few dozen women to where they are today, introducing Organic Certification helping the communities to train and grow. Getting paperwork and products to conform to global standards when most of the women don’t read or write is a huge challenge, but they have overcome all these problems and have plans to grow their production and range of products even further over the next few years.

We are delighted to be supporting Georgina and her cooperative and proud to bring their beautiful Organic Shea Butter directly to you, but we don’t want to stop at just that.  We want to help their community further by giving back and doing more, therefore you will see numerous projects come to life not only this year but in the years to come.

Giving back with clean, safe drinking water

The first project we are working on with Georgina will be the digging of a new well for a partner community in the Tolon Region (west of Tamale) which does not currently have access to a clean water supply.

The residents of this community must travel to other areas to fill containers with water and carry them back home. It is usually the girls who are tasked with collecting the water, meaning they miss out on valuable schooling. By helping build a well for this community we will not only give people access to safe, clean drinking water but also enable these young girls to have more time in school to fulfil their education.

A new production facility

Another project soon to start will be the building of a new production facility, enabling Georgina’s cooperative to pack and store their goods in a clean and covered environment, helping their business grow and empowering the community to prosper further.

Discovering Better for Others

Here at Naissance we are driven by a passionate desire, energy and enthusiasm to discover and create better, more ethical and sustainable ways of doing things. We care about our customers and the world we live in and we strive to help others as best as we can.
In recent years #TeamNaissance have supported various charities including the Movember Foundation, the Italian Red Cross, Brecon Mountain Rescue, Shelter Cymru, and numerous others.
2018 has seen our relationship with certain charities deepen and our fundraising efforts increase. Our newly formed ‘Charity Committee’ organise events for the team here to help raise both funds and awareness.

Brecknock Wildlife Trust

Our chosen local charity for our UK office is Brecknock Wildlife Trust, a charity who work in partnership with 47 other Wildlife Trusts across the UK. They aim to ‘create an environment rich in wildlife for everyone’. They manage 18 Nature Reserves for the benefit of wildlife and people and work to create, improve and restore rare habitats and ancient woodland
We support this organisation not only by raising much needed funds through our events but also by volunteering to help maintain and clean the wildlife areas and in the process learn and develop our own knowledge about respecting the environment.

The Björn Schulz Foundation

We also support a charity local to our German office in Berlin, this charity is The Björn Schulz Foundation who support children and young people with a life-threatening or life-shortening disease up to 35 years of age and their families.
They provide support at the in-patient children’s hospice Sonnenhof in Berlin Pankow and several out-patient sites. They also have two after-care buildings at Lake Chiemsee and on the island Sylt.

Mind

For 2018 we are also supporting one national charity Mind who provide advice and support to empower anyone experiencing a mental health problem. They campaign to improve services, raise awareness and promote understanding.

Here at Naissance we are on a constant journey of ‘Discovering Better’.
We are proud to announce ‘Naissance Quest’ a new long-term commitment of giving back to our grower’s communities. Naissance Quest will see wells being dug to provide clean safe drinking water and other much needed amenities built in our effort to empower and support these communities and help them to build a more prosperous future.

Our Commitment to the Environment

Here at Naissance we are constantly striving to improve, not just through the quality and provenance of our products but also the service we provide to our customers. We also endeavour to reduce our negative impact on the environment. Although we know that more can always be done, we are constantly committed to ‘Discovering Better’ and finding new ways to celebrate natural products while protecting the world we live in.

Responsible sourcing

An important part of our ‘Discovering Better’ journey is sourcing our products and ingredients responsibly. We always try and work directly with growers if we can which enables us to support independent businesses & their surrounding communities. Our Aloe Vera for our Aloe Vera gel, for example, is sourced from a small producer in Spain called Nino who we are proud to have built an amazing relationship with. We are also working with a wonderful cooperative in Ghana from whom we source Organic Shea butter. To read more on these projects click here. (link to Quest Section)

Recycling of our packaging

We always try and find the eco-friendliest packaging. Our range of powders, salts and waxes are packaged in new kraft-style Bio Bags. These pouches are made with up to 60 per cent renewable wood pulp which is biodegradable and will dissolve in healthy compost. The plastic (PE) part of the Bio Bags (which protects the products from moisture) contains a special additive that helps to break it down, lessening its impact on the environment.
Our bottles and tubs are not yet biodegradable, but our PETE plastic bottles and glass bottles can be recycled with your household recycling.
Our boxes are sustainably sourced, and you will find the FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) logo on all of them. The FSC is a global organisation dedicated to the promotion of responsible forest management worldwide.

Zero waste

Recycling is hugely important to our company. We try to ensure all packaging and packing materials we use are recyclable and we have recently invested in new equipment to help us minimise our excess plastic waste. Our staff are also encouraged to recycle everything they use on and off the shop floor and each member is provided with a bamboo eco-cup when they join us. Bamboo absorbs 35% more carbon dioxide per hectare than equivalent trees and is a very sustainable crop; a fast-growing grass, it requires no fertilizer and self-regenerates from its own roots, so it doesn't need to be replanted.

No microbeads

When you buy a product for your beauty regime, you always want to make sure you’re buying the best. Unfortunately, a lot of companies around the world add microbeads, non-biodegradable tiny particles of plastic, to their personal care cosmetic products. Microbeads, as the word suggests, are hardly visible to the naked eye and can flow straight from the bathroom drain into the sewer system contributing to the pollution of the oceans. Sea animals often eat or absorb microbeads which results in them being passed along the marine food chain.

To make sure that cosmetic products are completely free of any microplastic ingredients you need a guarantee. As a business we are proud to state that all of our products are 100 per cent free of plastic ingredients.
